Executive Summary

LabTrak is our flagship B2C healthcare mobile application serving South African healthcare workers—doctors, nurses, and clinical staff—who need rapid access to patient laboratory results.

Before LabTrak, healthcare workers had to navigate a cumbersome web portal, repeatedly log in, manually enter patient identifiers, and wait through slow page loads. This wasted valuable clinical time and delayed patient care decisions.

We built a cross-platform mobile app (iOS & Android) with barcode scanning capability that retrieves lab results in under 1 second. The app maintains persistent authentication, provides offline history, and recently added AI-powered lab result interpretation using Gemini and GPT models.

LabTrak has achieved over 30,000 downloads with 3,000+ daily active users processing 50,000+ barcode scans per day. The app has become an essential tool in busy outpatient departments and clinics, with users consistently rating it 5 stars for its speed and reliability.

The Challenge

South African healthcare workers in public hospitals face a critical daily challenge: accessing patient laboratory results from the NHLS TrakCare web system. The existing process was frustratingly slow and cumbersome:

Authentication Friction

The web portal required logging in every session, with credentials expiring frequently. In a busy outpatient department seeing 50+ patients per hour, this meant constant re-authentication.

Manual Data Entry

Staff had to manually type long patient identifiers (medical record numbers, episode numbers) from specimen labels—error-prone and time-consuming.

Slow Interface

The legacy web system wasn't optimized for mobile, causing long page load times and navigation difficulties on phones or tablets used at the bedside.

No Offline Access

Healthcare workers couldn't review previous results when network connectivity was poor—common in rural clinics.

The impact was significant: clinical decisions were delayed while waiting for results, staff productivity suffered, and the frustration led many to simply defer checking results or make decisions without complete information.

Our Solution

We built LabTrak as a native mobile application for iOS and Android using the Quasar/Vue.js framework with Capacitor and Cordova for native device access. The backend API is built on ASP.NET Core with a SQL Server database.

Core Workflow

1

Scan

Healthcare worker opens the app and scans the barcode on a specimen label

2

Extract

App extracts the patient/episode identifier from the barcode

3

Retrieve

API authenticates with NHLS TrakCare and retrieves results

4

Display

Results displayed in under 1 second, optimized for clinical decisions

Key Technical Innovations

  • Persistent Authentication: Secure credential storage and session management that keeps users logged in, eliminating re-authentication for each search
  • Intelligent Barcode Parsing: Recognizes multiple barcode formats used across different specimen types and laboratories
  • Optimized Data Pipeline: Proxy architecture caches and transforms data from TrakCare, reducing response times from 10+ seconds to under 1 second
  • AI-Powered Analysis: Google Vertex AI (Gemini) and OpenRouter (GPT) integration providing plain-language summaries, trend analysis, and interactive Q&A
  • Privacy-First Design: AI features anonymize patient data before external processing; chat histories stored on-device only

Key Features

Instant Barcode Scanning

Point your phone camera at any specimen label barcode and get lab results in under 1 second. Supports multiple barcode formats used across NHLS facilities. No manual typing—just scan and view.

AI Lab Result Analysis

Get plain-language summaries of complex lab results powered by advanced AI (Gemini & GPT). The AI explains what results mean, highlights abnormal values, and answers questions about the data.

Persistent Authentication

Log in once and stay logged in. Unlike the web portal that expires sessions constantly, LabTrak maintains secure session state so healthcare workers can access results instantly.

Flowchart Trend Visualization

View how a patient's lab values change over time with interactive flowcharts. Quickly identify improving or deteriorating trends—essential for monitoring chronic conditions.

Offline Search History

Access previously viewed results even without network connectivity. Search history is cached locally, allowing healthcare workers to review recent patients in areas with poor signal.
