Executive Summary

Yellow Africa enables last-mile access to energy and internet connectivity through asset financing. Managing a distributed network of thousands of sales agents across multiple countries presented a massive challenge in maintaining data quality, preventing fraud, and ensuring creditworthiness. They needed a robust solution to scale their operations.

We built KulaSell, a comprehensive sales and underwriting ecosystem. It consists of an offline-first mobile app for agents to capture customer data and perform biometric KYC (Smile Identity), and a centralized web portal for underwriters to review credit applications in real-time.

The platform has transformed Yellow's operations, reducing fraud through biometric verification, automating device security via phone locking integrations, and significantly boosting agent performance through built-in gamification (Spin & Win incentives).

The Challenge

The Situation

Yellow operates in informal markets where traditional credit checks are impossible. They rely on "Pay-As-You-Go" (PAYG) financing for smartphones and solar systems.

The Problem

Scaling this model required overcoming three critical hurdles:

Identity Fraud: Agents or customers could easily fake IDs, leading to asset loss.
Operational Bottlenecks: Manual application processing was slow, causing customers to lose interest and delaying sales commissions.
Asset Security: Ensuring that financed smartphones could be remotely locked if payments were missed was critical for the business model.

The Urgency

As Yellow expanded into new territories (Uganda, Rwanda, etc.), the manual processes were breaking down. They needed a technology partner who could build a highly reliable, offline-capable mobile solution that worked in low-bandwidth environments.

The Agent Mobile App (Cross-Platform)

Built with Quasar (Vue 3) and Capacitor, the mobile app is the agent's primary tool. It features:

Offline-First Architecture: Agents can capture applications in remote villages without internet, syncing data when they return to connectivity.
Biometric KYC: Integrated with Smile Identity, the app performs real-time face matching and ID validation to eliminate identity fraud at the source.
Gamification Engine: To drive sales behavior, we implemented a "Spin & Win" incentive system where agents earn tickets for sales and can win instant cash prizes.
Device Locking: The app handles the complex workflow of setting up device locking software at the point of sale.

The Underwriting Portal

A powerful web dashboard for the back-office team. It aggregates data from the mobile app, credit bureaus, and internal scoring models. Underwriters can view customer locations on maps, review uploaded documents, and approve or reject loans with a single click.
